Nathanael Skelton was born in the Hawkes Bay and began his dance studies in Pukekohe, continuing his training at the International Ballet Academy in Christchurch under Sherilyn Kennedy and Carl Myers. In 2004 he won the Audience Choice Award at the National Ballet Awards.  He received a scholarship to complete his final year at the Elmhurst School of Dance in Birmingham, UK, where he studied under Irek Mukhamedov. He worked as an apprentice at Birmingham Royal Ballet (BRB) and was invited to dance at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, as part of a Young British Dancer of the Year gala.

In 2006 Nathanael joined BRB where he worked with Sir Peter Wright, Desmond Kelly and David Bintley. His roles included The Nutcracker (Jack-in-the-Box, Chinese and Russian dances), Kenneth MacMillan’s Romeo and Juliet (Mandolin Dance),The Sleeping Beauty (Cavaliers, Puss in Boots) and Swan Lake (Spanish Dance). He enjoys working on new choreography, and has created several pieces of his own, performed by BRB. He also worked with the company’s outreach and education department.

Nathanael joins the RNZB for Coppélia and is delighted to return to New Zealand, to catch up with some ‘real rugby’, get out on some waves and enjoy the blue skies. He will still keep a bit of an eye on Aston Villa.
