Nigel Gaynor - Music Director
Nigel was born in Sydney, and trained at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and the Aspen Music Festival School, USA. He has worked with The Royal Ballet, English National Ballet, Northern Ballet UK, The Australian Ballet, Ballet Philippines, and numerous leading international orchestras.
Career highlights include working with Rudolf Nureyev, Sir Robert Helpmann and Jiři Kylián; conducting The Australian Ballet's Red Earth by Stanton Welch on live television; collaborating on new ballets with Glen Tetley, Wayne McGregor and Christopher Wheeldon; and music directing for Northern Ballet's China tours and English National Ballet's tours to Taiwan and Spain. Nigel conducted Allesandra Ferri's performances of Manon with the Australian Ballet, American Ballet Theatre's Julie Kent and Guillaume Graffin for a Gala program in Christchurch NZ, and also Derek Deane's spectacular Swan Lake for English National Ballet.
Nigel has composed and arranged for ballet and theatre productions and has recently completed a full length ballet score. He is actively involved in music education in dance and has produced eight volumes of Beautiful Music for Ballet Class.
Nigel's first engagement with the RNZB was in 2011 for The Sleeping Beauty, and he became Music Director in 2013.
